The Formal Insertion Device or FID is a brass tapered cylinder
with a threaded hole in the rear into which the 'spectra' is inserted prior to splicing.
The commercial FID next to the freedivers FID which is just
the guts of a ball point pen with the end flared. Another view
of it.
To make a strong splice measure at least a 12 inch segement and mark this on the spectra. Then
measure another 12 inches from where you intend to begin the splice and mark this as the exit point of
your splice. Next insert the spectra into the FID.
Now insert the FID into the spot where you determined
to begin the splice.
Continue pushing the fid down the inner portion of the weave until you reach
the point you marked and then remove the FID
thru the side of the spectra.
Here is a side view of a shooting line attachment
splice to the shaft. Here is a top view of the same splice.
Finish the job with a splicing stitch at each point
where you spliced the spectra to keep it secure in a non-tension state.
